Getting Started
Go to http://vegtex.com and click “Sign Up” in the upper right corner.
Fill in your account and profile information. Check the “Yes, I’d like to create a new blog” box if you would like to create a blog at sign up. Fill in a URL and title for your blog. For example, if you want to name your blog “Food Finds,” then your url would read “http://vegtex.com/foodfinds” and you would enter “Food Finds for the name.” To finish, click “Complete Sign Up.”
On the registration confirmation page, upload an avatar for your account. If you don’t want to at this time, you can always add one later in your profile section. Check your email for an account activation link to activate your account and log in to Gack Yack.
To make your first blog post, go to “My Blogs” on the top left corner and click “(Your blog title) Admin.” Click “Dashboard.” This will take you to the main Admin control page for your blog.
To create Categories for your posts, click “Posts” on the left side menu. Click “Categories.” Enter your category name and click “Add Category.” You can add as many category names as you like, at any time.
*Through the “My Blogs” link, you can manage your posts, comments, write a new post and change the theme for your blog.
Click “Add New” under “Posts” to begin your first blog post. Enter a title and write your post. Assign your post a category from the list on the lower right side of the page. To publish your post, click “publish.” Your blog post is now live on your blog and the web. Click “View Post” (located above your post title) to see your new post on your blog.
To change the theme of your blog, click “Appearance” on the left side menu. Preview different blog themes by clicking “preview.” When you decide on a theme, click “Activate” and your blog theme will change.
To add widgets to your blog, click “Widgets” under “Appearance” on the left side menu. Activate your widgets by dragging your desired widget and dropping it under “Sidebar 1″ on the right side of the page. Update the individual widget options, and click “close” to add more widgets.
If you have an existing user account:
To create your own blog under an existing user account, click your name next to your avatar in the upper right corner. On your Profile page, click “blogs” in the left side profile menu. Click “create a blog.” Enter a url and blog name. Click “Create your blog.” The success message will ask you to login to access your blog. Click “login” to go to your blog admin area. See the above instructions for how to create your first post.
What should you write about? Anything related to your vegetarian, vegan, raw food, etc., dietary lifestyle. Share ideas, recipes, tips, food philosophies, opinions about social, health and environmental issues, favorite foods, etc. Be sure to interact with other Gack Yackers to get feedback and discuss topics through your blog and the rest of the site.
About Gack Yack
Gack Yack started as an idea for a site that provided mobile shopping list functionality to users. The concept seemed simple enough, but soon spiraled out of control when we couldn’t stop adding to the feature list. We knew we wanted to make a custom application that would improve any consumer’s grocery shopping experience, but we also wanted to focus on healthy eating and animal welfare, since all of the people involved were vegetarian or vegan. Eventually, we ended up shelving most of our labor-of-love ideas because development proved to be too time consuming. Over the next two years social media exploded onto the technology scene, and everything changed. Thanks to advances in open source CMS applications, we were finally able to utilize a social networking software combination of Wordpress MU, Buddy Press and BBPress to create the site we’ve always wanted. So, after two years, a variation on our original idea has finally come to life.
This site has everything you need to connect with other people who share like-minded alternative dietary ideals. We are very excited to build a community that shares the same values of healthy eating, kindness to animals and environmental awareness. Enjoy!
