Bill Mahr: IHOP serves unhappy pancakes

December 1, 2009

IHOP is cruel and Bill Mahr is not happy about it. In the video below, Mahr teams up with the Humane Society of the United States to shed light on IHOP’s support of cruel animal slaughters through the use of caged eggs. You may now weep in your pancakes.

Awww, So Cute: 30 Million Male Chicks Killed Each Year

October 5, 2009

According to an undercover investigation by Mercy For Animals, over 30 million male chicks are ground up alive each year at the world’s largest egg-laying breed hatchery: Hy-Line International in Spencer, Iowa.

As you can see in the video below, chicks are tossed around carelessly as “sexers” separate the males from the females. The males are cast aside because they cannot produce eggs, and cannot grow fast enough to make any kind of profit for meat. After separation, the males are dropped into a meat grinder while the females are forced to endure a lifetime of cruelty.

According to Mercy For Animals:

“For the surviving females, this is the beginning of a life of cruelty and confinement at the hands of the egg industry. Before even leaving the hatchery they will be snapped by their heads into a spinning debeaker – a portion of their sensitive beaks removed by a laser. Workers toss and rummage through them before they are placed 100 per crowded box and shipped across the country.

The callous disregard for animal welfare at this facility is not isolated. In fact, the conditions documented during this investigation are completely standard and acceptable within the commercial egg industry. Referred to by Hy-Line corporate leaders as mere “genetic products,” these chicks are treated just as they are viewed – as inanimate objects, rather than the sentient creatures they are.”

Before watching the video below, I ate eggs from time to time, but only bought the free-range cartons with lovely pictures of birds roaming free around an open field. Sadly, I’m sad to see that isn’t at all what actually happens.

Warning: this video is pretty graphic.
